The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) officers arrested five persons, including a printing press owner, on charges of fake receipts scam in Ramanathapuram new bus stand parking lot and seized ₹36,250 in cash during the searches on Thursday.
Following a complaint, the officers had formed a team and raided the new bus stand, wherein they found that some of the municipal staffs had allegedly indulged in issuing fake receipts to motorists using the parking lot. The names of the arrested persons were given as Ramesh, Marimuthu, Rishi Kesavan, Anandan and printing press owner Joseph.
Discreet probe revealed that the gang had printed original and fake receipts with identical serial numbers. However, they had not issued the original receipts and instead given the fake receipts, it came to light during the confession, an officer said and added that they had seized 52 fake receipt books and each contained 100 leaves.
A senior officer said that they conducted a search in the house of Marimuthu of the Ramanathapuram Municipality and seized some documents and cash. The exact role played by each of the accused had been recorded and the officers said that cases had been registered for cheating, loss to exchequer and among other criminal offences.
An officer from the Directorate, Municipal Administration, Chennai said that they have gathered inputs about the irregularity and conducted an internal inquiry into it. “We are awaiting a detailed report in this regard based on which we will take action,” he added.
Meanwhile, the authorities have deployed alternate staff at the new bus stand to issue tokens to the vehicle users and strict monitoring has been complied with, they added.
