Representatives of teachers’ associations have urged Higher Education Minister P. Viswanathan to resolve the long-pending service benefits and salary issues of staff of erstwhile constituent colleges of Bharathidasan University (BDU) and Anna University.
A stakeholders’ meeting was held in Tiruchi on Wednesday. In its petition, the Association of University Teachers of Tamil Nadu (AUT) requested the Minister and the Commissioner for Collegiate Education to systematise the absorption of 32 regular teachers of BDU’s erstwhile constituent colleges into the varsity’s teaching structure.
AUT general secretary K. Raja said that BDU should accommodate at the earliest, the 32 teachers based on their qualifications and eligibility. The association sought a single seniority list that would included these teachers, instead of maintaining a separate seniority list for them.
A petition by Tamil Nadu Anna University Teachers’ Association (TNAUTA) said that the delay in absorbing long-serving staff of the erstwhile constituent colleges had denied them career growth opportunities.
“Despite serving at the Anna University for 15-17 years, staff have missed out on Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) benefits and promotions,” TNAUTA secretary R. Udhayakumar said in the petition.
The body urged the change or rotation of deans and department head appointments every three years to give all eligible academicians an equal opportunity in serving in these senior positions at Anna University. An improvement of laboratories and equipment in Anna University’s constituent colleges was also sought.
Guest lecturers from government arts and science colleges in Lalgudi, Perambalur, and other places participated in the meetings.
