Pattiveeranpatti police in Dindigul district on Thursday arrested eight persons, including two police constables, in connection with a fraud case. The accused swindled around ₹48 lakh under the pretext of selling a gold plate to the complainant.
According to police, P. Sumith Robert Paul of Usilampatti in Madurai district had lodged a complaint with the police regarding the fraud.
Sumith Robert Paul and S. Sankaramoorthy knew each other for the past 10 years through real estate business. Sankaramoorthy along with P. Nagaraj, C. Karuppaiah, M. Suresh, K. Muthupandi and S. Kuppusamy had told Sumith Robert Paul that they were in possession of an expensive auspicious gold plate that they were willing to sell.
Sumith Robert Paul offered Sankaramoorthy ₹48 lakh in cash and received the gold plate. As he was returning in his car, police constables Thangaraj and Kathiresan intercepted the car under the guise of a vehicle check and seized the gold plate.
Sankaramoorthy, Nagaraj, Karuppaiah, Suresh, Muthupandi, Kuppusamy, Thangaraj and Kathiresan divided ₹48 lakh among themselves. Sumith Robert Paul demanded ₹48 lakh be returned to him. When the money was not returned, he realised he had been cheated and lodged a complaint with the Dindigul Superintendent of Police.
A special team was formed and the eight accused Sankaramoorthy, Nagaraj, Karuppaiah, Suresh, Muthupandi, Kuppusamy, Thangaraj and Kathiresan were arrested in connection with the fraud case.
