Police have arrested a youth for allegedly murdering his wife as she opposed his second marriage.
Police said Maharaja, 35, of Kondaanagaram under Suththamalli police station limits on the outskirts of Tirunelveli married Amaravathi, 34, of Pudupettai in Panruti taluk of Cuddalore district in 2008. The couple has two sons.
After Amaravathi went missing for a few months, her mother filed a complaint with the Suththamalli police on September 23.
When the police grilled Maharaja, he reportedly confessed that he had murdered Amaravathi by pushing her into a defunct quarry at Papankulam near Gangaikondan near here in May 2025 after taking her to the spot on his bike.
As the police took Maharaja to the quarry and searched the spot on Friday, they collected a saree, skull and a few bones from the spot. Forensic experts visited the spot and collected the evidences.
Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Balasubramaniam Shastri inspected the scene of crime.
During investigation, police found that Maharaja married a 23-year-old woman in 2024 which triggered frequent quarrel between him and Amaravathi. As the quarrel continued, Maharaja murdered Amaravathi, the police said.
Gangaikondan police have registered a case in this connection.
