Congress legislators on Friday (September 26, 2026) flashed banners inside the Jammu and Kashmir assembly that called for resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in the wake of recent reported controversy about differences with the Election Commission of India (ECI).
During the Question Hour, several Congress legislators stood up and trooped into the well of the house with banners and disrupted the proceedings. They flashed banners stating that “there was no democracy without fair elections” and demanded the removal of the CEC Kumar.
J&K Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather objected to the display of the placards. “The Election Commission of India was not under the control of the Assembly. Take your seats, before I take action against you,” the Speaker told the Congress legislators.
CPI(M) MLA M.Y. Tarigami also supported the protesting Congress members.
Meanwhile, Congress workers and leaders held a protest in Jammu. Congress Member Parliament and J&K incharge Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain led the protest. The Congress leaders, including senior local leaders, gathered outside the Nirvachan Bhawan, Jammu, and demanded the resignation and prosecution of CEC Kumar. The Congress said the police detained several leaders.
“We have been detained in large numbers as we were demanding the CEC’s resignation,” said former Deputy Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Tara Chand.
