Salem Corporation Mayor, councillors withdraw sit-in protest

After a 12-hour sit-in protest, Salem Corporation Mayor A. Ramachandran and councillors have withdrawn their demonstration.

Alleging that Salem Corporation Commissioner Lalitaditya Neelam had not sent the resolutions passed during council meetings to the State government, the Mayor and 20 DMK councillors began an indefinite sit-in protest on Friday (September 25, 2026), at around 10.30 a.m. They had also demanded action against certain people who had entered the council hall during a meeting held in August.

The protest continued until the night. The police deployed at the Corporation office held talks with the Mayor, but both he and the councillors were firm that they would not withdraw their protest until their demands were met.

Around 10.30 p.m., the Corporation Commissioner came to the Mayor’s chamber and held talks with him. The Commissioner assured the Mayor that he would look into the demands, following which the Mayor and the councillors ended their protest after 12 hours.

Speaking to reporters, Mayor Ramachandran said that the Commissioner assured him that he would send the resolutions passed in the council meetings to the government. Likewise, Mr. Neelam assured that he would take steps to file a case against the persons who entered the council hall last month.

“The Commissioner said he works jointly with the council. As talks were satisfactory and our demands were met, we withdrew our protest,” Mr. Ramachandran added.
