An exhibition exploring the Divine Feminine through sacred art, traditional craft and contemporary design will be held at the Lakshmi Mills Urban Centre in Coimbatore on October 2 and 3.
Titled ‘Sankalpa’, the exhibition has been conceptualised by Vijayalakshmi Rudrappan of Krishna Parijata and Abhishek S. Murthy of Haldi Kumkum. It will bring together bronze work, temple jewellery, handloom textiles, natural fibres and floral art, with the installations drawing from temple architecture and Japanese spatial design.
The exhibition will feature sections on Ashta Lakshmi, the Tridevi, Sri Vidya and the Sapthamatrika. The Tridevi section will present installations centred on Durga, Saraswati and Maha Lakshmi, while the Sri Vidya section will use geometric forms such as circles, triangles and squares.
At the centre of the exhibition will be the ‘Bindu’ section, featuring Sudarshana and Yoga Narasimha. The Sapthamatrika section will feature the seven divine mothers — Brahmani, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani and Chamunda.
The curatorial approach treats traditional craft as a living practice rather than as a representation of the past. Artisans and specialists working with bronze and brass, temple jewellery, handloom textiles and floral arrangements are involved in creating the installations.
Aara Design’s Aparna Venkatesh and Saranya Gogineni, and Ikebana practitioner Okha Meenakshi Devi and her team are the design partners. Lakshmi Mills Urban Centre is the venue partner.
