Jammu and Kashmir LoP meets Union Home Minister a day after introduction of Statehood resolution

BJP leader Sunil Sharma, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Saturday (September 26, 2026), a day after J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah introduced a resolution on the restoration of Statehood in the Union Territory’s legislature.

A BJP spokesman said Mr. Sharma apprised the Union Home Minister of matters “related to the prevailing security situation, law and order, development initiatives, public concerns, and matters related to the ongoing session of the J&K Legislative Assembly”.

“Mr. Sharma highlighted the key concerns being raised by the people of J&K and discussed matters requiring continued attention, coordination, and support from the Union government,” the BJP spokesman said.

During the discussion, Mr. Shah reiterated the Union government’s commitment to peace, development, and prosperity in J&K and assured Mr. Sharma of continued support and cooperation in addressing matters concerning the people of the Union Territory, the spokesman said.

‘Centre already committed to Statehood’

The meeting between Mr. Shah and Mr. Sharma assumed significance in the wake of the resolution brought in by Mr. Abdullah on the restoration of Statehood to J&K. The resolution also referred to the 2000 report on greater autonomy and the 2024 resolution on special status, calling upon the Centre to meet the demands of the people of J&K.

National Conference spokesman Imran Nabi Dar clarified the intention of the resolution. “People of Jammu will not support the stand of the BJP on Statehood. Only way to bring relief to the people of J&K is granting Statehood. Eight BJP MLAs supported the 2000 autonomy resolution. How is it anti-national now? Mr. Abdullah made it clear that the current resolution is about Statehood, a commitment made by the Centre,” said Mr. Dar.

BJP rejects resolution

The resolution is likely to be discussed in the Assembly on Monday. Mr. Sharma, however, rejected the resolution in the Assembly on Friday (September ), saying it was an attempt “to smuggle the 2000 autonomy resolution and 2024 resolution back in”.

“[Former Prime Minister] Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji rejected this very demand in 2000. The BJP will not tolerate its revival today. The NC is manufacturing this controversy purely to distract from two years of failed governance and mislead the people of J&K, especially Kashmir,” Mr. Sharma said.
