General secretary of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and former Minister T. Jeevan Reddy alleged that the Congress government has failed to take up even small repairs on the three Kaleshwaram Project barrages to lift back water and meet the irrigation and drinking water needs in the El Nino impacted year.
Farmers and general public are suffering shortage of water for irrigation and domestic needs, despite the government having an opportunity to provide them water by lifting it from Kaleshwaram barrages by taking up minor repairs. More than 1,100 tmc ft of water went into the sea as surplus.
Telangana has the opportunity this year to avail water as most of the reservoirs have low storage and the previous government had developed infrastructure even to pump back water into Sriramsagar project which now has water only half its capacity. Mr. Jeevan Reddy reminded that the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) had given a free hand to the State government to take a decision on water lifting from Kaleshwaram barrages.
Turning to Medigadda barrage, he said even going by the Congress account of ā¹1 lakh crore spent on Kaleshwaram project, the barrage value would be ā¹4,000 crore and that of the seventh block would come to ā¹600 crore. The damaged portion would cost only ā¹200 crore and the government could have brought it back into use by sparing the amount and avoided drought conditions.
