To mark the World Heart Day, observed on September 29, the Institute of Cardiology at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) organised a public awareness campaign and walkathon on the theme “Healthy Hearts, Brighter Tomorrows” on Tuesday.
According to a press release, the programme, held under the auspices of Cardiological Society of India (Chennai Chapter), commenced with “Don’t Miss a Beat” walkathon, which was flagged off from Madras Medical College (MMC) by dean K. Shantaraman.
Healthcare professionals, faculty members, medical students and members of the public took part in the walk to highlight the role of regular physical activity in preventing lifestyle-induced cardiac conditions.
Following this, a series of public awareness and skill building sessions were conducted. Director and Head, Institute of Cardiology K. Kannan, president of CSI Chennai Chapter D. Prabhakar and secretary of CSI Chennai Chapter M. Nandakumaran, participated.
A hands-on Basic Life Support and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation training workshop was conducted for the public to educate bystanders on immediate, life-saving intervention during out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrests.
The event featured lectures on “Yoga and Heart” and “Nutrition and Heart”. It concluded with a public interaction programme during which doctors addressed various queries on preventive screening, early warning signs of myocardial infarction and heart healthy lifestyle modifications, the release said.
