Launching intensive measures to mop up tax arrears, Tiruchi Corporation has urged defaulters to remit their dues to avoid penal action.
Corporation Commissioner N. Ponmani, in a statement, said the civic body had so far mopped up 55.42% of current property tax demand and 18.11% of arrears, recording an overall collection of 46.88% of tax dues. The Corporation stood third among the urban civic bodies in the State in overall collection of tax and non-tax demands. In an attempt to achieve cent per cent collection, the list of property tax defaulters was published on the Corporation website. Following this, ₹3.15 crore in tax arrears was collected and the Corporation had initiated steps to collect the remaining dues too.
Apart from sensitising citizens on prompt payment of tax dues, penal action, including disconnection of water supply,was being initiated against long-time defaulters as per due procedure.
Similarly, steps were being taken to mop rentals from tenants in Corporation buildings and shops. Establishments of long-time defaulters were being sealed, Ms. Ponmani said.
Pointing out that tax payers could avail 5% discount (subject to a maximum of ₹5,000) if they paid their second half-yearly dues within October 31, she appealed to the city residents to remit their tax dues immediately to avail the opportunity.
The Corporation had also taken steps to popularise online payment of taxes, using a variety of payment modes including UPI, she added.
