Two siblings, Niramathi, 10, a Class V student, and Balapraveen, 6, were electrocuted at Achankulam village near Abiramam in Ramanathapuram district on Wednesday.
According to police, the children suffered an electric shock when they accidentally touched an iron rod attached to a non-functional drinking water purification plant near their house around 9:30 a.m.
They were immediately rushed to Kamuthi Government Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.
Demanding justice and accountability for the deaths, the villagers blocked Kamuthi-Aruppukottai highway. They urged the government to provide a job to a member of the bereaved family, a house site, and ₹20 lakh as compensation for their death, and registering of a police case against the official responsible for the incident. They also refused to accept the body, pressing their demands.
Meanwhile, Kamuthi Block Development Officer Chandrasekaran issued an order suspending Achankulam panchayat secretary K. Rasu, citing negligence and lack of proper maintenance of the water purification plant.
