The Left parties on Thursday staged a demonstration in Thoothukudi demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that around 13 crore voters had been disenfranchised in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The CPI, CPI(M) and CPI(ML) had called for the demonstration across Tamil Nadu in support of their demand for Mr. Kumar’s resignation and immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
A protest, led by CPI district secretary Karumban, was organised near Chidambara Nagar bus stop. CPI(M) central committee member P. Sambath, district secretary K.P. Arumugam and CPI(ML) district secretary Murugan addressed the gathering and highlighted the demands.
The protesters raised slogans demanding Mr. Kumar’s immediate removal, alleging that crores of voters had been removed through SIR exercise. They claimed that objections that were raised during the revision process were ignored by the Election Commission.
They also demanded action against Mr. Kumar and called for an immediate halt to the SIR process.
