The traditional folk festival of Venkatagiri town, the ‘Poleramma Jatara’, got off to a colourful start at the Goddess Poleramma temple in Tirupati on Thursday.

Minister for Endowments Anam Ramanarayana Reddy carried the silk ‘vastram’ on his head and formally handed it over to the temple authorities on behalf of the State government.

The State government sanctioned ₹50 lakh for the festival, and it even released ₹40 lakh in the first phase. Devotees and donors have contributed in the form of a crown, hands, feet and ornaments, all made of gold, to be adorned on the deity.

Mr. Reddy, who represented the Venkatagiri Assembly constituency in the past, recalled his long association with the public and the festival. Apart from making a ₹1.70 crore fixed deposit, the Minister also announced to deposit ₹25 lakh in the temple account for the expenses.
