Amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia, compressed natural gas (CNG) prices in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) increased by ₹1 per kg from Thursday (October 1, 2026), as Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) cited the rise in the cost of domestically produced gas and imported Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG).

The residents of MMR have to purchase CNG at ₹89 per kg, effective from October 1. Maharashtra’s largest CNG supplier, MGL, stated, “The rising cost of input gas and to ensure the continuity of supply of CNG to our customers, we have decided to increase CNG prices by ₹1 per kg in Mumbai and adjacent areas.”

CNG is mostly used by commercial vehicles such as taxis, auto rickshaws, and buses, as well as private vehicles in Mumbai. It is likely to affect around 12.93 lakh vehicles across the MMR. With an increase in the price of CNG, commuters may have to bear the impact, as transportation expenses could rise.

This is the second price hike in the last three months. A month ago, MGL increased the CNG price by ₹2, bringing the cost of CNG to ₹88 from ₹86. In May, the cost of CNG rose to ₹86 from ₹84. This year, this is the fifth hike. In January, it was ₹80.50 and rose to ₹89.

MGL operates across Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Latur, and Dharashiv, as well as Chitradurga and Davangere. It supplies CNG to more than 1.3 million vehicles through a network of over 500 CNG stations and has connected around 3.2 million households to PNG.
