Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner G.S. Sameeran on Thursday (October 1, 2026) inspected ongoing stormwater drain works in Adyar and Sholinganallur zones, being undertaken as part of precautionary measures ahead of the Northeast monsoon.

During the inspection, the Commissioner reviewed stormwater drain works being carried out near Tidel Park in Zone 13 (Adyar), where Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is undertaking construction activities. The drainage project is being executed to provide connectivity to the Buckingham Canal. Dr. Sameeran examined the progress of the works and instructed officials to expedite their completion.

The Commissioner subsequently inspected the Okkiyam Maduvu Canal area in Zone 15 (Sholinganallur), where CMRL works are under way. Officials informed him that water had previously been flowing through a 10-metre-wide opening in the canal. Following the removal of an earthen obstruction, the waterway has now been widened to 98 metres, enabling smoother and more efficient flow of water. Dr. Sameeran reviewed the measures undertaken to improve drainage capacity ahead of the monsoon season.

He also inspected stormwater drain works in progress at the Nookampalayam Junction Road area and directed officials to complete the remaining works at the earliest.
