The gram sabha meetings was conducted in all village panchayats of the district on Friday to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and participants vowed to work against substance abuse and child marriage.

District Collector Anand Mohan, who participated in the gram sabha meeting held at Therkku Valliyoor village under Valliyoor panchayat union, appealed to the participants to create drug-free village by shunning narcotic substances and to avoid alcohol. Besides closely monitoring the children, their activities, their contacts and other habits, the parents should create awareness about drug abuse and encourage their wards to follow healthy lifestyle, he said.

“The public should alert the police or other government officials about sale of banned drugs and tobacco products and child marriage in their area. The informers’ identity will not be revealed at any circumstance,” assured the Collector, who administered anti child marriage and anti drug abuse pledge to the participants.

The Collector appealed to the public to segregate garbage at their homes itself so that managing the solid waste would become easier for the local bodies. Moreover, the surroundings must be kept clean so that water stagnation during upcoming rainy season, the prime reason for mosquito breeding, would be avoided.

“Please avoid self medication in case of fever or any other ailment during monsoon. The patients, instead of searching internet for the medicines, should visit the nearby government hospital or the primary health centre to get the right prescription from the qualified medical practitioner,” Mr. Anand Mohan said.

The Collector also inaugurated the Deepavali special discount sale of khadi products in the showroom in Palayamkottai as part of the birth anniversary celebration of Gandhi.
