Even in an era where deliberate attempts are being made to diminish and discredit Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy, the relevance of Gandhian ideals continues to grow day by day, Kollam Mayor A.K. Hafeez has said here on Friday. He was inaugurating a public meeting organised jointly by the district administration, the Gandhi Peace Foundation, the Corporation, the District Information Office, and the Education department as part of the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations.

“Regardless of how history is twisted, nations across the globe are increasingly embracing Gandhian principles with each passing year. Speaking at a time when forces are attempting to divide society along caste and religious lines, Gandhi’s secular ideals have only become more vital,” said the Mayor who also added that there has never been another personality anywhere in the world comparable to Mahatma Gandhi.

The day’s events began at 7.15 am with a foot march starting from Chinnakkada, which was flagged off by District Collector Anie Jula Thomas. Upon the march’s conclusion at Gandhi Park, MLA Vishnu Mohan, the Mayor, and the Collector jointly paid floral tributes at the Mahatma’s statue. Presiding over the function, Mr. Mohan said that India could never have risen to its prominent global standing without Mahatma Gandhi. District Collector and Deputy Mayor Karumalil Udaya Sukumaran also spoke on the occasion.
