The District Administration has strengthened enforcement measures in Thattanchavady constituency ahead of the October 6 bypoll in Puducherry.
Returning Officer Arjun Ramakrishnan in a release said additional enforcement squads have been deployed to prevent any violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Monitoring of expenditure by political parties and candidates have been strengthened in the constituency, he said.
Four flying squads and one static surveillance team have been put on round-the-clock duty in the constituency for attending to complaints of MCC violations immediately. In addition, five bike squads consisting of one Executive Magistrate and one police officer in each squad are active round-the clock in the constituency, he said.
Three Excise Squads have been deployed on 24 x 7 basis to check any illegal movement or distribution of liquor. Check posts have been erected in three locations on the border points of the constituency at Tindivanam bypass near the IOCL Petrol Pump, ECR near the Lawspet Police Station and 100 feet road near Rajiv Gandhi Women and Child Hospital, he said.
An audio awareness campaign to educate voters on the harmful influence of money power and muscle power was held in the constituency during the last two days. Inducement of voters, including giving and accepting of cash, gifts, liquor or freebies is an offence under Section 170 of the BNS, punishable with imprisonment of one year or fine or both, the officer said.
Similarly, undue influence of voters by threat or intimidation is an offence under Section 171 of the BNS, punishable with imprisonment of one year or fine or both, he said.
