The Salem district police arrested two persons on Friday (October 2, 2026) in connection with the murder of an elderly couple that occurred two months ago.
On July 20, Jayaraman (85), a resident of Sendraya Reddiyur near Deevattipatti and his wife, Amaravathi (70), were murdered by unidentified persons, and her jewellery worth one sovereign was stolen. Subsequently, five special teams were formed to nab the culprits but police were unable to make progress for weeks.
Following this, few police personnel were transferred to various districts. Meanwhile, on Friday night, the police arrested C. Dineshkumar (32) and A. Suriya (26), residents of Kadayampatti near Deevattipatti, in connection with the murder. They were remanded in prison.
In a release, the District Police stated that, in order to identify the accused, the special teams verified CCTV footage recovered from multiple locations within the Deevattipatti police station limits, mobile tower signals, call detail records (CDR), more than 1,000 mobile numbers, and money transactions and inquired with the family members of the deceased and history-sheeters as well.
The duo were arrested in connection with three theft cases recently, and during the investigations, the duo allegedly confessed that they murdered the couple and robbed the jewellery. The police seized 13 sovereigns, including 2.5 grams of gold robbed from the Amaravathi and 350 grams of silver items from the accused persons, the release added.
