District Collector Anand Mohan inspected the Corporation’s animal birth control facility at Melapalayam here on Saturday and reviewed the vaccination of stray dogs.

According to Mr. Anand Mohan, vaccination of stray dogs against rabies and animal birth control are being done in the local bodies on Saturdays to control the population of the uncared for dogs and save them from deadly rabies infection. Since both the operations would save the public from stray dog menace, the local bodies – right from the town panchayats to Tirunelveli Corporation – had been told to continue this exercise on Saturdays.

As per the survey conducted in Tirunelveli Corporation, the urban civic body houses over 3,500 stray dogs. Of this, 3,180 stray dogs had been vaccinated against rabies. Since an indelible green ink is applied during vaccination, the public can easily identify the vaccinated dogs.

The Corporation, which is neutering 150 to 200 stray dogs every month, has so far castrated 867 dogs.

“We’re taking steps to create one more operation theatre for neutering the stray dogs and an additional dog shelter so that we can increase the number of sterilizations. While specific spots have been identified within the Corporation limits for feeding the stray dogs, the urban civic body will take stern action against the individual who abandon their aged dogs or the pets afflicted by diseases,” he said.
