The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) has undertaken preliminary works for the fructification of the proposal to construct apartment-type flats in its two land parcels in the upscale Race Course area, under rental housing scheme.

Initiatives are in place for widening the roads leading to the properties, according to official sources.

The TNHB is in the process of securing the permissions of the Police and Forest Departments, and the Directorate of Town and Country Planning, a senior official said.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development had directed the TNHB to undertake the project at DFO Compound and Thomas Park Housing Unit.

In July, Minister for Housing and Urban Development P. Rajkumar inspected the two locations and instructed officials to prepare the proposal for the project under rental scheme at the two properties, one measuring 3.3 acres and the other 6.41 acres.

These properties had remained unutilised for nearly a decade after dilapidated structures were demolished.

A total of 108 houses were demolished in DFO Compound and 222 in Thomas Park Housing Unit.

The project to be undertaken by the TNHB is expected to be on the lines of the one executed at its Kavundampalayam property. The apartment complex, with 14-floor buildings, comprise 1,848 houses. The construction was carried out in 2016 at ₹512 crore.
