The Puducherry Traffic Police have issued over 17,600 challans for violations related to various provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act during an enforcement drive conducted in September.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic D. Divya in a release said various police stations have prosecuted 17,672 persons for MV Act violations in Puducherry last month.
Of the total challans issued, 5,594 were issued for driving without helmet, followed by 2,534 for wrong side driving, 2,216 for driving while using phone, 1,700 for jumping red light, 1,012 for driving without wearing seat belt, 186 for drunken driving and 179 related to underage driving/ riding, a release said.
Six cases have been registered during the month against heavy vehicle drivers found violating prescribed entry-time restrictions. Strict enforcement and legal action will continue against such violations to regulate movement of heavy vehicles, the SSP said.
A case has also been registered against a parent for permitting a minor to drive. In other cases of underage driving, parents/guardians were summoned to the police station and issued warning. Necessary legal action was also initiated in certain cases, she said.
“We will continue the drive to check all violations. The enforcement measures are intended not only to prosecute violators but also to promote voluntary compliance with traffic regulations, improve road-user discipline and contribute to the reduction of road accidents and fatalities,” the release said.
