Two men were arrested for allegedly posing as railway employees, luring passengers with promises of reserved tickets and robbing them at secluded spots near Perambur. The accused were identified as Ajit Bhagat, 21, and Sanjeev Kumar, 32, both from Bihar.
According to the police, Rupesh Kumar, 24, who works at a private dal processing unit in Andhra Pradesh, had arrived at Perambur railway station on September 4 to travel to Bihar. The accused allegedly approached him near the station and offered to help him secure a reserved ticket.
They allegedly took Rupesh to Bandar Garden in Perambur, where they threatened him and fled with gold jewellery worth around ₹2.5 lakh, a mobile phone and ₹7,000 in cash.
Based on his complaint, the police registered a case and traced and arrested the duo. During interrogation, the police found that the accused had allegedly used a similar modus operandi to rob another passenger of ₹10,000 and a mobile phone.
The police suspect the duo may have targeted passengers from northern States in at least four similar incidents.
