A 50-year-old construction worker was allegedly stabbed to death during a quarrel at Vellalapatti near Karuppur on Sunday morning.

According to police, the quarrel broke out between L. Anwar Basha (50), a resident of Vellalapatti near Karuppur, and acquaintance C. Ezhumalai (50), a resident of Pudhu Colony. During the quarrel, Ezhumalai allegedly stabbed Anwar with a knife, killing him on the spot.

Protest against private bar

Following the incident, relatives of the deceased gathered on the spot and staged a road roko. They claimed that Anwar and Ezhumalai used to be friends but fell out after a quarrel at a private bar in the area two months ago.

They alleged that the bar sold liquor round the clock, and many accidents occurred in the locality. They demanded that the bar be shut.

On information, the Karuppur police held talks with the residents, failed to pacify them. Subsequently, the police, along with the revenue officials, sealed the private bar.

Following this, the relatives allowed the police to send the body for post-mortem examination.

The police also registered a case and arrested Ezhumalai.
