The Congress on Monday (October 5, 2026) blamed the economic policies of the Narendra Modi government for foreign institutional investors (FIIs) pulling out of the Indian markets.

Addressing a press conference, senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil claimed that FIIs had withdrawn ₹4.03 lakh crore from Indian markets between January and September this year, and accused the BJP-led government of “wrecking” the economy.

“With foreign investors offloading around ₹29,000 crore in the three trading sessions of September 29, 30 and October 1, this is a major concern,” Mr. Gohil said.

He said foreign portfolio ownership in National Stock Exchange-listed companies had declined to about 15.8%, a 17-year low, and alleged that it was a result of the government’s “failed” economic policies and its emphasis on “crony capitalism”.

Mr. Gohil also raised concerns over the impact of market losses and taxation on retail investors, noting that more than 13 crore people invest in the stock market.

Referring to statements made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2024 encouraging people to invest in the stock market, Mr. Gohil sought accountability from the Prime Minister for the losses suffered by investors.

The Congress leader demanded that the government explain the sustained FII outflows, the rupee’s depreciation, rising fuel prices, and the losses suffered by retail investors.
