The Coimbatore district administration on Monday distributed educational assistance of ₹6,26,915 to 42 students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to help them pursue higher education.

The assistance was distributed by Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar at the Collectorate in the presence of representatives of the GD Naidu Trust and Chief Makers NGO, which supported the initiative.

The district administration said 10,310 of the 10,408 students who passed from government schools had enrolled in higher education, registering an enrolment rate of 99%. Of the 945 students who appeared for the supplementary examinations, 815 (86%) had joined higher education, placing Coimbatore second in the State in this category.

As part of its efforts to improve higher education enrolment among economically disadvantaged students, the district administration has so far provided about ₹30 lakh in educational assistance to 148 students, including those from single-parent families and without parental support.

It has also facilitated free higher education for 10 eligible students without parental support or from below-poverty-line families through colleges.
