The Kannur Cyber Crime Police have registered a case and launched an investigation against the owner of a Facebook account for allegedly circulating a fake post using the photograph and name of Congress leader and Kannur MP K. Sudhakaran.
The case was registered against Rajeev P.R. Rajeev, the owner of a Facebook account bearing the same name. The post allegedly gave the impression that Mr. Sudhakaran had said Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan should be removed from office immediately, failing which the situation would reach a stage where people would throw rotten eggs at him.
According to the FIR, the fabricated post was circulated in a manner suggesting that Mr. Sudhakaran himself had made the statement. The police said the alleged act was intended to insult and defame the MP and create unrest among the public and Congress workers.
The case was registered on the basis of a complaint submitted by Mr. Sudhakaran and received by email from the Kerala Police headquarters. Cyber Crime Inspector K.V. Mahesh is conducting the investigation.
The alleged fake statement had triggered controversy amid social media posts attributing criticism of the Chief Minister to Mr. Sudhakaran.
After learning that a false statement against the Chief Minister was being circulated in his name, Mr. Sudhakaran had approached the Home Minister, seeking action and requesting that the source of the alleged misinformation be traced.
Mr. Sudhakaran said the messages and posters being circulated as his statements against the Chief Minister were baseless and factually incorrect. He alleged that such campaigns were deliberate attempts to mislead the public and carry out personal attacks.
He maintained that spreading fake news and engaging in personal vilification could not be justified as political activity or under the guise of freedom of expression, and called for strong action against those responsible.
