Delhi Police personnel deployed to manage an Opposition protest against the Election Commission of India (ECI) in central Delhi on Tuesday (October 6, 2026) were equipped with body cameras, in a heightened documentation measure, days after three women journalists alleged sexual harassment by police personnel during a previous demonstration at Jantar Mantar.

New Delhi district Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma was also seen wearing a body camera while supervising the security arrangements on Tuesday. The cameras will help establish what transpired during a protest and provide video evidence in the event of allegations against police personnel, an official on the ground said.

The move comes amid increased scrutiny of the force’s handling of demonstrations in central Delhi. “All senior officials have been asked to wear these body cams. This is for collecting evidence,” said another officer.

The deployment comes days after a woman journalist alleged that Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vivek Bhagat assaulted and sexually harassed her during a protest on Saturday (October 3, 2026). Two other women journalists also alleged sexual harassment by police personnel during the demonstration. The allegations are being examined by the police.

The protest on Tuesday has been called by Opposition parties over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being undertaken in several parts of the country. The Opposition has been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging irregularities in the manner in which the voter-roll revision exercise is being conducted.

The Opposition leaders were not allowed to march towards the ECI headquarters, Nirvachan Sadan. Heavy security arrangements were put in place across central Delhi, with multilayer barricading erected on roads leading towards the building.

Delhi Police personnel, paramilitary forces and Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed in large numbers. Several buses were parked outside Nirvachan Sadan to transport protesters if required.

Barricades and police personnel were positioned along the route from Makar Dwar through Ashoka Road, Parliament Street police station and Jantar Mantar, with security tightened at multiple points leading towards the ECI building.

The Delhi Police said no permission had been sought for the protest and reiterated that prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita were in force in the area.
