“Youth should develop interdisciplinary interests, broaden their reading and accumulate knowledge from various fields. They need to use such knowledge for all-round development of the society,” M.Y. Karidurganavar, retired chemistry professor at Karnatak University, Dharwad, said in Bagalkot on Tuesday.
“Higher education institutions should create an environment where knowledge is utilised for the development of the society by fostering scientific thinking, a research-oriented mindset, and a socially conscious outlook among students,” the professor said.
He was speaking after inaugurating a one-day national seminar titled “Recent Advances in Interdisciplinary Sciences for a Sustainable Future”, organised by BVV Sangha’s Basaveshwar Science College. The event was organised by its Internal Quality Assurance Cell at the BVVS Sajjalashree Nursing College auditorium.
“Integrating knowledge from various branches of science is essential for building a sustainable future. New developments in the fields of science and technology must be effectively harnessed for the welfare of the society. Interdisciplinary research plays a significant role in this regard; fostering a spirit of achievement among students requires teaching that incorporates historical and literary contexts. The process of acquiring knowledge should instill happiness, self-confidence, and creativity in students. Teachers are key mentors who shape the future of students, and the latter should respect their hard work and guidance,” he said.
There were four technical sessions. Mr. Karidurganavar delivered a lecture on the ‘Development of Polymeric Second-Order Non-Linear Optical (NLO) Materials’. “Contrary to the common belief that polymers are electrical insulators, some polymers can act as electrical conductors,” he said.
Kotresh M.G., assistant professor in the Department of Physics at Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ballari, presented a paper on the topic ‘Nanoscience for Pure Water: Photo-induced Catalysis for Sustainability’. Kailas D. Sonawane, professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Shivaji University, Kolhapur, delivered a lecture on ‘Antibiotic Resistance: A Global Health Issue’.
N.B. Naduvinamani, professor of mathematics and director of the CDC at the Bagalkot University, presented a paper on ‘Surface Roughness and Bearing Performance in Sustainable Engineering’.
G.S. Sulibhavi, college governing council chairman, urged teachers and disciples to understand the significance of the Guru-Shishya tradition of ancient India.
Mahesh N. Athani, sangha secretary, emphasised that a thirst for knowledge and punctuality were crucial for today’s students. He urged students to prioritise their learning.
