Security was stepped up outside the Parliament Street police station in New Delhi on Wednesday (October 7, 2026) ahead of the planned arrival of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) convenor Saurav Das, who is scheduled to submit an ‘intimation letter’ to the Delhi Police regarding the organisation’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10.

The CJP’s October 10 protest is aimed at pressing for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the revocation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls

Mr Das said he would reach the police station at 10 a.m. to inform the Delhi Police about the proposed demonstration. “The Constitution of India allows us to peacefully assemble and the right to protest peacefully,” he said in a post on X.

His planned visit comes hours after the Delhi Police detained around 260 people, including 10 MPs, during an INDIA bloc protest against the functioning of the Election Commission and demanding Mr Kumar’s resignation. The police had said no permission was sought or granted for the protest and the protesters continued to protest amid prohibitory orders imposed under Section 163 BNSS in the New Delhi jurisdiction.

The latest development also comes against the backdrop of repeated attempts by protest groups to formally inform the Delhi Police about demonstrations against the SIR and Mr. Kumar. Last week, All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha and a delegation had gone to the Parliament Street police station to submit an intimation letter regarding their proposed October 2 march towards Jantar Mantar.

The proposed AISA demonstration was also not granted permission, following which protesters were detained over three consecutive days. Police had cited the protests as unauthorised while the organisers maintained that they were exercising their right to peaceful assembly.

The sequence of events has brought the question of permissions for protests in central Delhi into focus, with several political and civil society groups seeking to demonstrate against the Election Commission and the SIR.

The CJP protest on October 10 is the latest in a series of demonstrations in the Capital seeking Mr Kumar’s resignation. Several student organisations and youth wings have announced they will join the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10, 2026.
