Chief Justice of India Surya Kant will preside over the 34th annual convocation of National Law School University of India (NLSIU) on October 17, while actor and multilingual theatre artist Arundathi Nag will be the chief guest.

According to the NLSIU, the convocation will begin at 10.30 am at Jnana Jyothi auditorium, Palace Road.

Sources in the university said that the decision was approved by the university’s executive council and general council on September 9, which were chaired by CJI and chancellor of the University, Justice Surya Kant.

On August 27, the NLSIU administration had announced the cancellation of convocation, which was originally scheduled on September 12, due to “unavoidable circumstances” and students could collect the degrees in absentia after 700 students signed a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor opposing the participation of CJI Surya Kant and Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra.

NLSIU students had come in support of National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) students and opposed the statement issued by Mr. Mishra against them.

This development came after NALSAR students in Hyderabad opposed the presence of the CJI at their convocation citing his remarks in the Supreme Court hearing of protests by students against the NEET exam paper leak.

Later, BCI chairman Mr. Mishra released a statement to halt the enrolment of NALSAR’s graduating batch in the State bar councils and courts for jobs. The statement was withdrawn after it was met with opposition and criticism.
