The Congress organised protests across Telangana on Wednesday condemning the detention of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and INDIA bloc MPs during their protests in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

In Sangareddy, Congress leaders Jagga Reddy and Nirmala announced that they would stage a solidarity diksha along with party workers at the Ambedkar statue till Mr. Rahul Gandhi is detained. ‘Vote Bachao–Desh Bachao’ was the slogan raised during the protest earlier.

In Husnabad, Minister for Transport Ponnam Prabhakar staged a sit-in at the Mahatma Gandhi statue along with Congress leaders and workers. He said the detention of Mr. Rahul Gandhi, Ms. Priyanka Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders who were protesting peacefully was undemocratic.

The Minister said the Congress was seeking protection of the voting rights of every eligible citizen and alleged that concerns had been raised over the deletion of voters, particularly from SC, ST, BC and minority communities.

In Achampet, a rally was organised under the leadership of DCC president and MLA Chikkudu Vamshi Krishna, with the Youth Congress leading the programme. State Youth Congress president Shiva Charan Reddy and district leaders participated.

The Congress leaders demanded a comprehensive inquiry into changes in the electoral rolls and deletion of votes, restoration of names of eligible voters, correction of deficiencies in the Form-6 process and greater transparency and accountability in the electoral system.

Meanwhile, Minister for Roads and Buildings Komatireddy Venkat Reddy condemned the detention of Mr. Rahul Gandhi, Ms. Priyanka Gandhi and INDIA bloc MPs. He alleged that the BJP-led Centre was using the police to restrict democratic protests.
