Farmers union affiliated to the Left parties have urged the State government to pay the insurance premium portion, to be remitted by farmers to avail crop insurance cover, in addition to its share of premium amount to be paid to the insurance cover providing companies during the current samba/thaladi season.

As per the crop insurance scheme, the premium after deducting a small portion of the premium to be paid by farmers, is equally borne by the Union and State governments.

However, considering the current scenario, farmers’ unions – the two Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangams, affiliated to the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the All India Kisan Maha Sabha (AIKMS), affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation – has urged the State to relieve farmers from the burden of paying their share of premium for crop insurance.

Already, the unions said, farmers were facing severe financial crunch as they had lost kuruvai corp this cultivation season and were uncertain about the prospects of samba and thaladi.
