HYDERABAD
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has criticised the State government for registering cases against farmers who demanded the release of water from the Jurala project to save their standing crops, alleging that irrigation engineers lodged the complaints at the behest of ruling party leaders.
Deputy Floor Leader of the party in the Assembly T. Harish Rao said on Thursday that it had become a regular practice for the Revanth Reddy government to register cases against farmers and take them to police stations hand-cuffed. It was due to government failure that the farmers were not in a position to get water for irrigation to save their standing crops, he remarked.
He alleged that the government had intentionally neglected lifting of water when there was flood in the Krishna river to do injustice to Telangana farmers to benefit those in Andhra Pradesh. Instead of addressing their problems, the government was registering cases against farmers protesting against power cuts and demanding water for saving crops. He demanded that the government withdraw the cases on farmers immediately.
Former Minister S. Niranjan Reddy said the farmers had lifted gates of Jurala last month only to save their crops as they were withering. The government booked cases against 14 farmers for the crime of attempting to save their standing crop. He alleged that a delegation of Ministers and Congress legislators visited Karnataka for two days with public money to get water released from Almatti-Narayanpur, but failed to get even a drop.
