Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will hold a special meeting with Ministers on October 12 to review the impact of El Nino and the prevailing rainfall deficit in Telangana, with a focus on relief measures for farmers and steps to address emerging water and power requirements.

Key issues

The meeting is expected to take stock of conditions in areas that have received insufficient rainfall, the difficulties faced by farmers and the immediate interventions required to mitigate the impact of the dry spell. Agriculture, irrigation, drinking water supply and the rising demand for electricity will be among the key issues on the agenda.

The move comes after an extensive discussion on the rainfall deficit at the recent State Cabinet meeting. Telangana has recorded 17% less rainfall than normal, with drought-like conditions prevailing in nearly 235 mandals, according to official estimates cited by the government.

The State government has already adopted a resolution in the Legislative Assembly urging the Centre to declare drought-affected mandals and extend adequate financial assistance. It has also sought a special package of Rs. 20,000 crore to help the State tackle the impact of the deficient rainfall.

The meeting on Tuesday is likely to examine the action plan prepared by the Cabinet sub-committee on drought mitigation, along with relief measures that need to be taken up in rainfall-deficient areas. Suggestions emerging from political parties, consultations with farmers’ organisations and inputs from experts in various sectors are also expected to figure in the discussions.
