Accusing the Kozhikode Corporation Council of violating a High Court order by passing a resolution demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has vowed to pursue legal action.
In a statement, BJP Kozhikode city district president K.P. Prakash Babu said the High Court had issued an order in 2023 on resolutions moved in the Corporation Council, following a petition filed by Navya Haridas, then BJP council party leader and a sitting councillor.
Mr. Babu said that under Rule 18(4)(m) of the Kerala Municipality Rules, 1995, resolutions moved in the council should fall within the Corporation’s administrative jurisdiction, and national issues could not be taken up through such resolutions, the court had ruled.
He alleged that the resolution against the CEC, passed at the Corporation council meeting earlier this week, violated the court order. Though BJP councillors strongly opposed the resolution, members of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) joined hands to pass it, he said.
Describing the resolution as an attempt to divert public attention from genuine issues, he alleged that the LDF and the UDF had united to shield the ruling CPI(M) from questions concerning the problems faced by people within the Corporation limits.
Mr. Babu said the resolution was also evidence that the INDIA bloc’s political understanding had extended to the Kozhikode Corporation.
