GUWAHATI:
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sought a “thorough, impartial and time-bound” probe into the death of a 20-year-old student Himashri Boro from Assam whose body was found in a forested area in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district.
In a letter to his Andhra Pradesh counterpart, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday (October 9, 2026), Mr. Sarma urged them to intervene and ensure a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Himashri’s death.
Mr Sarma said the student’s body was recovered from a jungle area after she had called her family expressing fear over the presence of many men around her in a second-class compartment of the Dibrugarh Vivek Express train. She had boarded the train at Visakhapatnam on October 5.
A student of B. Borooah College in Guwahati, Ms. Himashri had travelled to Visakhapatnam as part of a dance troupe and was returning to Guwahati.
“Her bag was found in the train’s S2 coach and her body was later recovered from a forested area near Malayapuram in Srikakulam district. In view of these circumstances, which raise a serious suspicion of foul play. The incident has caused profound grief and concern in Assam,” Mr. Sarma wrote.
He said that he had deputed a senior Assam police officer to Andhra Pradesh to coordinate with local law enforcement agencies.
He said: “It is imperative that the culprits, if any, must be identified and brought to book at the earliest.”
