A 17-year-old girl from Chennai was lured by an unidentified youth to Salem after befriending her on social media and robbed her jewellery and valuables.

The girl, a resident of West Mambalam, was befriended by a youth who identified as Rahul over Snapchat. They frequently chatted and shared their pictures and videos for the last year.

Under such circumstances, the youth told that he would be going to marry soon and the girl also asked him to share his mobile phone number. The youth replied that he was a CBI officer and had five mobile phone numbers.  He also said that he was not supposed to share his numbers to anyone and that they should be confidential. He continued to have interaction through social media.

Police sources said he invited her on the pretext of introducing her to his friends and asked her to be neatly dressed. He had also shared a railway ticket on the app to travel. On August 31, the girl travelled to Salem Junction as per instruction of the youth. He received her at the station, and asked her to go into the rest room at the station to wash her face so that she could appear fresh when he introduced her to his friends. While leaving to the restroom, the girl removed her gold chain of four sovereigns, her bag containing a laptop and mobile phone. On her return after some time, she realised that the youth was missing.

The girl was clueless and transpersons in the station came to her rescue. The girl contacted her parents and explained to them about what she had undergone. She was handed over to the police station in Salem junction. Police launched an investigation to trace the youth after scrutiny of CCTV footage. He was suspected to be from Erode, said police sources.
