An unidentified gang hacked a youth to death near Manamadurai here on Saturday.
Police said, A. Kaliswaran, 20, of Annavasal in Sivaganga district, worked as a sound and light operator.
On Saturday evening, he went to Sangamangalam to set up a sound system for a housewarming ceremony.
While he was setting up the system, a gang arrived on motorcycles and hacked him with a machete and fled from the location.
He was severely injured and taken to the Manamadurai Government Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way.
Manamadurai police have registered a case and further investigation is under way.
Police sources said in the preliminary investigation it appeared that it could be a murder due to mistaken identity.
