A 19-year-old engineering student was found dead inside his hostel room in Medipally on Sunday night after he was allegedly humiliated and forced to pay for his seniors’ drinking binge as ‘punishment’.
The victim, identified as Jadhav Sai Teja, a second-year B. Tech student at Siddhartha Institute of Technology, Narapally, and a native of Utnoor in Adilabad district, was found hanging in his room at Madhu Boys Hostel.
According to preliminary investigations, Sai Teja attended a birthday party on Saturday night along with fellow student David and junior Murali. The group consumed alcohol in his hostel room. During the party, Murali, who also brought other friends along, picked up a fight with Teja and David.
“On Sunday, Murali told one Chinni Babu and others about the fracas, who then called Teja and David and thrashed them. They then took them both to a bar in Narapally, where they allegedly generated a bill of ₹10,000 and forced Teja to pay,” said Sub Inspector K. Shiva Kumar from Medipally police.
“When one Prashanth asked him to buy cigarettes for him, Teja went to his room and hanged himself.” added the officer.
Before taking his life, Sai Teja recorded a video message to his father, in which he named Chinni Babu, alleging him and others had humiliated and thrashed him.
Sai Teja’s father, demanding action against those responsible, said that he first received a call from Teja asking him for money. “He then called again and told me about the thrashing by Chinni Babu and others and claimed that he is going to take his life before hanging up,” he said.
The Medipally police have booked cases under abetment to suicide against Chinni Babu, Murali, Shiva, Fayaz, Ismail, Prashant, Mani Yadav, Sai, and others. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the harassment.
