Collector S. Kandasamy inaugurated a new Poompuhar showroom at Texvalley commercial  complex at Gangapuram, Chithode, on Thursday.

The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation (Poompuhar), a Government of Tamil Nadu undertaking, is renowned for promoting traditional handicrafts and preserving ancient art forms while improving the livelihood of artisans.

The long-established Poompuhar showroom on Erode–Mettur Road has been functioning successfully for over five decades, attracting customers from Erode and neighbouring districts. Shoppers frequent the outlet to purchase handicrafts for home décor and gifting, while government and private institutions, as well as banks, also procure handicraft products through Poompuhar. The marketing of these products continues to enhance the livelihood of the artisans who create them.

As part of its expansion, the corporation has now opened a new sales outlet at Shop No. 1114. The new showroom features a wide range of Geographical Indication (GI) tagged handicrafts such as Nachiarkoil brass lamps, Swamimalai Panchaloha idols, Thanjavur art plates, Kallakurichi and Mamallapuram stone sculptures, Thanjavur dancing dolls and Thanjavur paintings. A variety of beautifully crafted items from across the State and other states are also available for sale.
