The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (TGSPDCL) has taken an initiative of installing new distribution transformers in the pole-mounted method in the city to overcome several problems linked to the ground-level installation of DTs.
Chairman and Managing Director of TGSPDCL Md. Musharraf Faruqui said on Thursday that the pole-mounted DT installation method was being introduced to modernise the power distribution system in Greater Hyderabad. Until now, most of the DTs were installed close to ground along the roadsides.
Such an arrangement had been causing inconvenience to pedestrians and accumulation of garbage and plastic waste around the transformers had been creating hazardous conditions often. In some instances, short circuits and electricity leakages too had led to accidents.
To overcome such problems, a new technical method called the “Pole-Mounted Distribution Transformer” system was introduced. In the new approach, an iron structure would be fixed approximately 10 feet above the ground on the electric pole and the DT would be mounted on it. This set up would keep the transformer safely above ground level and would ensure that pedestrian movement was not obstructed.
As garbage and waste material would not get accumulated around the transformer, safety standards would be significantly improved. Further, the new system would reduce installation costs as it would eliminate the need for large concrete foundations.
Mr. Faruqui inspected a model pole-mounted distribution transformer installed at the Amberpet Police Lines on Thursday and provided some suggestions. He instructed the authorities to adopt the new method of pole-mounted DT installation for all new DT installations.
Director of TGSPDCL Narasimhulu, Chief Engineer (Metro) Prabhakar, Superintending Engineer Venkanna and other officials, accompanied the CMD during the visit.
