A group of villagers and members of a non-governmental organisation — Makkal Nala Peravai — have submitted a memorandum to the Thanjavur district administration seeking the removal of signboards in Hindi along roadsides.
In the memorandum submitted by them at the general grievance meeting held at the Collectorate on November 3, they pointed out that hitherto Tamil, English, and Hindi languages denoting the name of the village were displayed only at the villages where railway stations exist.
But recently, signboards displaying the name of villages in Hindi appeared at places such as Vasthachavadi, Thirukkanurpatti, Maappillainaicken Patti, Arputhapuram, Manjapettai, and other hamlets located along the highways mainly used by two-wheeler riders and bullock-cart users. This is an act of imposition of Hindi on non-Hindi speaking people, they said and urged the district administration to remove the signboards installed along the roadsides at these hamlets located on the outskirts of the District Headquarters town, Thanjavur.
