In all, 33711 polling stations are getting ready for the two-phased local body elections in Kerala scheduled for December 9 and 11.

The State Election Commission (SEC) has issued detailed guidelines with respect to the facilities required in the polling stations.

In three-tier panchayats, there will be 28,127 polling stations, while the municipalities and Corporations will have 3,569 and 2,015 stations respectively.

The district-wise breakup of polling stations are as follows: Kasaragod (1,370), Kannur (2,305), Wayanad (828), Kozhikode (3,097), Malappuram (4,343), Palakkad (3,054), Thrissur (3,282), Ernakulam (3,021), Idukki (1,192), Kottayam (1,925), Alappuzha (2,085), Pathanamthitta (1,225), Kollam (2,720), and Thiruvananthapuram (3,264).

All polling stations and activities related to the elections will adhere to the green protocol. Secretaries of the local bodies have been asked to put in place measures for the collection, segregation, and disposal of wastes on polling day. Wherever needed, the services of the Haritha Karma Sena will be made use of.

Chosen buildings

Election officials have been directed to ensure that all buildings chosen for the polling stations have electricity and water supply, furniture and toilets. Voters should also be provided benches and chairs while they wait for their turn. Voters with visual impairment, differently abled voters and the elderly will be permitted to cast their vote without waiting in queues.

Postal ballots will be issued only to officials on election duty, the SEC said on Wednesday. The Kerala Panchayat Raj Act and the Kerala Municipalities Act do not have provisions for issuing postal ballots to any other section other than the election officials, the Commission said.
