A 72-year-old farmer suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a wild elephant in the Thalavadi hills on Sunday night.
Matheppa of Gumtapuram was guarding his farm when an elephant strayed out of the dense forest in the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and entered his field. On hearing noise, he woke up and was shocked to find the animal inside the farm premises. As he attempted to flee, the agitated elephant attacked him, leaving him with a fractured leg and multiple injuries. Hearing his screams, local residents rushed to the spot, prompting the elephant to retreat into the forest.
The injured farmer was taken to the Government Upgraded Primary Health Centre in Thalavadi and later shifted to the Government Hospital in Chamarajanagar, Karnataka, for treatment.
Forest Department officials and the police have launched an inquiry into the incident. The attack triggered tension and concern among residents in the area.
