More than 50 families residing along the Panthalkudi channel demanding land patta submitted petitions with the District Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar here on Monday.
M. Muthupandi, 45, a resident of the area for more than 40 years and one of the petitioners, said, the residents, predominantly from Scheduled Caste community, were living for several generations in the same area.
“Though most of them were daily wage workers, through education, they have uplifted their living condition to a certain extent,” he noted.
Despite living a decent life, their inability to own the land they have lived for several decades, has been a disadvantage for them in accessing several welfare measures and assistances, he added.
“A roof over our head is everyone’s dream and most of our life is spent on owning one. But, we despite working throughout our life are unable to own a piece of land,” Mr. Muthupandi stated.
As the State government was providing free patta land to several people with the eligible criteria, they should also consider them for receiving the land rights.
“We have paid all the necessary taxes for the houses we live. At least taking that into consideration we should be given land rights,” he demanded.
