Awareness meetings, release of information brochures and rallies marked the World AIDS Day at various places in the city on Monday

An AIDS Awareness meeting and rally was organised under the aegis of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) on the directions of Principal District and Sessions Judge and DLSA Chairman Chinnamsetty Raju.

DLSA secretary R. Sanyasi Naidu said that HIV/AIDS patients can approach the DLSA for free legal aid. He informed that children affected by AIDS can avail free education and protection. Those requiring assistance or needing clarifications could call on the toll free number 15100 for immediate help.

The Divisional Railway Hospital at Visakhapatnam marked the day with awareness events.

World AIDS Day, is gloabally observed on December 1 every year. It aims to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, honours those who have lost their lives to HIV-related illnesses, and supports individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

At an awareness meet organised at Kutikuppala Surya Rao Hospital at Kancharapalem, Dr. Kutikuppala Surya Rao underlined the need for governments to ensure insurance coverage for AIDS patients as the prohibitive costs of tests and drugs was coming in the way of poor patients continuing medication. HIV should not be seen as a single disease as the incidence of co-infections like TB, cancer and even heart attacks are higher among HIV-infected persons as their immunity is compromised.
