Appadurai street in Teynampet, close to Seethammal Colony, poses several problems for pedestrians. Footpaths blocked by shops, construction debris and garbage, potholes and uneven surface force them to walk on the road, say locals.
Acharya (name changed), 31, a daily commuter, said: “Walking through this stretch is a daily struggle. Footpaths are often blocked by construction debris, ladders, and even old mattresses. Sometimes, I have no choice but to step on to the road — it is extremely unsafe, especially for children and the elderly.”
He said, “There is a vending zone near the police booth, but shops and kiosks along KB Dasan Road operate outside the designated area, narrowing the pedestrian space even further.”
Residents also pointed out sanitation hazards. One of them said, “Garbage, plastic bags, and construction debris are scattered everywhere. Open garbage bags left on the footpath attract pests and emit a foul smell.”
He added, “Large potholes and uneven patches make driving risky, and open manholes are a constant threat. Some sections of the road are poorly repaired, causing water to collect in depressions after it rains.”
“Compound walls and transformer view cutters are plastered with torn posters, banners, and political advertisements,” he said.
S. Madhan Mohan, Teynampet Zone chairperson, said the problems persisted as officials were held up with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. “I will instruct zonal authorities to rectify the issues,” he added.
