On the eve of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed on December 3, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday called for creating an inclusive society that ensures a brighter future for persons with disabilities.
In a statement, Mr. Stalin said the Tamil Nadu government places strong emphasis on the welfare of persons with disabilities and has been presenting State awards every year on the day to recognise contributions.
He said the State government has been taking steps to ensure equal rights and opportunities for persons with disabilities to ensure that they live with dignity. The United Nations has announced “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress” as the theme for the 2025 observance, and the State government has been implementing various initiatives based on this principle, he said.
Listing several measures taken by his government, Mr. Stalin said laws had been amended to allow persons with disabilities to be appointed as nominated members in local bodies across the State. This has given them a role in shaping welfare policies and taking part in the decision making process, he added.
